Tips to Prevent Quiet Quitting in the Workplace

December 27, 2022 admin

Happy female entrepreneurs reading an e-mail on computer while working together in the office. Focus is on redhead woman.

At the time of the interview, candidates exuberantly proved themselves that they should fit the job perfectly. You are blown away by their performances at the outset, and soon after, you find them they are stuck on a hamster wheel.

Businesses are dependent on employees to improve sales to some extent. From brainstorming new ideas to conducting research about the latest trends, there are a lot of things that require them to be working beyond and above their usual standards or the bare minimum they are required to do.

Unfortunately, the zeal in your employees vanishes slowly and surely, and they are seen quite quitting. Though it is not a new thing, it should be prevented from growing up in the workplace to ensure your employees are not running on empty.

What is quiet quitting?

Quiet quitting is a practice of adhering strictly to your job without taking on additional tasks. In other words, you keep yourself busy doing tasks that you are paid for and do not take the initiative to do something extra or different to learn to rise above your current level or standard.

There could be several reasons why employees quit. One of the reasons is to avoid occupational burnout. This is a common scenario among those who are burning the candle at both ends to maintain work–life balance.

However, some employees have other reasons, like declining engagement at work. They do not have clarity from employers about what they are expected of, fewer growth opportunities, lack of appreciation and acknowledgment, and no effort by an employer to boost their morale.

Quiet quitting cannot be eliminated from the workplace, but you can prevent it from rising to an uncontrollable level that affects the productivity of your business.

Ways to prevent quiet quitting

If you have started a business, you will likely need some employees. You may leave everything to your employees so as to focus on the core activities.

If you are on benefits and have taken out a money loan today from a direct lender, you will focus more on marketing, but do not forget that your employees are the real assets.

Ignoring the needs of your employees will amount to business suffering as your employees will just be quiet quitting. Here is what you can do to prevent it in the workplace.

  • Give performance feedback

Employees want feedback. As an employer, you should offer performance reviews periodically – either monthly or quarterly. Giving your employees feedback does not mean you are to pull them to pieces.

One of the biggest mistakes that managers make is that they have a go at their employees when something wrong they do or happens. Performance review does not mean that you just have to pick holes in their work or you are to highlight bad things about their work.

You should talk about good things about their work. Do not fight shy of appreciating when they do something above and beyond their usual standards. Even if they have met the target within the deadline, you should appreciate them.

Do not just assume that they have done what they are paid for. Acknowledgment is a must.

  • Stay in touch with them

Being in touch with them will help you know their grievances. For instance, if they are on a project, you do not need to wait for them to have completed the project. You can join them to ask about their progress, what kind of problems they are facing, or if they need any resources to succeed.

You can call for a meeting when you wish to know what your team is doing. Ask them if they have any challenges. They are more likely to throw light on areas that have slipped from your sight.

  • Introduce growth opportunities

Opportunities for learning are crucial for employees. Most people in the workplace do not make an effort to go beyond their comfort level as they do not see any growth opportunities.

They feel that there is no point in doing something extra for the company as this is not going to pay you off. Even if you have a small company, you should ensure that your staff is learning new things.

For instance, you can introduce professional development programs for your employees. When they know that they are to learn more and more to survive in the company, they will try all the harder to prove themselves.

As an entrepreneur, you should welcome new technology and trends, and if your employees are not acclimatized, you should not be afraid of investing money. You are responsible for ensuring that your employees are updated – after all, they are working for your company.

Expecting them to make do with outdated technology will not just force them to quit quitting but take a toll on your business productivity also.

  • Help them accept high-responsibility work

Though each employee has their own role in the workplace, you should try to encourage them to take up some high-quality work. If they are reluctant or not sure they can do it well, you should still give them a chance.

Expect that this is their first time, so they may need to do better. It is essential that you do not criticize them at that time. Try to train them before handing in the project, so they are clear with your expectations.

Do not just leave them alone in the project. Your participation is equally important to figure out if they are able to take it in their stride. Do not be shy to give them a helping hand if they have any problems.

Summing up

Keeping a great employee can be just as complicated as finding a new employee. You can reduce the level of quiet quitting in your office if you understand the concerns of your employees.

Try to offer them some benefits, acknowledge their performance, and egg them on taking up high-responsibility jobs. Try to be in touch with them so you know their challenges and problems to fix them.
